FROZEN FOODS
“What's your stance on frozen foods?”
ANSWER: I do not recommend frozen foods, except on special occasions (frozen durian, etc.). When fresh food is available, we should choose it instead. Frozen food is damaged by the cold, but the main problem is that they are consumed cold. Eating frozen foods is the equivalent of putting an ice pack in the stomach!
“When you address the issue of frozen foods, you perhaps miss the point that some of us thaw the food to room temperature before ingesting it. I find thawed frozen berries to be a most useful thing in wintertime for smoothies. And I have even heard it argued by certain highly-researched raw family members, that because these berries and such are flash-frozen soon after being picked, that they may even be more nutritious than fresh berries (or okra or whatever) that have been transported hundreds of miles, only to sit under florescent lights for a few days... Alas, we do our best...;-)” - Jay
ANSWER: You’re right Jay, the problems with frozen foods are not as great if those foods are consumed thawed. However, most people eat those berries frozen, in smoothies for example. Freezing destroys approximately 15-30% of vitamins. But the main thing to remember is that frozen foods are no longer “fresh.” They are always second choice. But you’re right, we do our best! :)
