From the Editor

Dear readers,

A lot has been going on lately. I'm getting as much done as possible before my trip to Bali in December. I've written before about this trip, itwill be my first one to South-East Asia. I'm going there in order to enjoy the sun, eat the best tropical fruits of my life, discover a new culture, and come up with new great ideas for my online business and work. I'm so excited about this!

We are currently working on an interactive weight loss and detox program that will be available to anybody who wishes to experience a complete life transformation with the raw food diet. This program will come just in time for your new year's resolutions.

Someone said, “If you could have done it on your own, you would probably have already done it by now.” With this in mind, Pure Health & Nutrition will continue to be a constant source of support and information on a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Yours for health & success,

Frederic

Topic: Answer to a Nutrition Student About the Raw Food Diet

“I am a dietetics student at McGill University. I have been hearing a lot about this raw food diet. I have done some reading about it, but I still do not see the point in it. Is it a personal choice, or is it actually healthier than eating cooked products?

You mentioned that you have been doing research, have you published your results? If so, where can I find them? I am very curious as to the benefits of this diet.

You have also written a book. Does it contain methods to obtain all of the essential nutrients?

Thank you for your help. I would appreciate it if you could write me back (I get bonus points in class for having researched or asked a question pertaining to nutrition).”
Claudia

ANSWER:

Dear Claudia,

Without any question, those following a raw-food diet do it because they believe it is a healthier choice. I personally believe it's a much healthier choice, and that for many reasons.

1- Fruits and vegetables are the healthiest foods there is. There's no question about that. We're not saying anything new here, it's just that we recommend making them the foundation of our diet!

2- The Standard American Diet, or any assorted version of it, is a recipe for disaster. Most nutrition experts agree that we at least need to eat differently.

3- Cooking destroys many nutrients and creates toxic compounds in the process. This has been proven scientifically. Of course this depends on the mode of cooking, but cooked foods are less nutritious than raw foods.

4- It is impossible to live without raw foods. Eventually, you would die of nutrient deficiency. However, it's perfectly possible to live without cooked foods or with only very minimal amounts of it.

5- More than 13,000 scientific studies show a link between degenerative diseases and the consumption of animal products.

6- Grains and dairy products have been consumed by humans for only 5 to 10,000 years - which is a fleeting moment in the history of humanity. Allergies to grains and dairy products are very common.

7-
Biologists and anthropologists classify human beings as being anatomically frugivores - that is essentially similar to the anthropoid apes who eat a diet that consists primarily of fruits and vegetables. Although we are omnivores by choice, we are not omnivores by design.

8- The reason people follow a raw-food diet is because they feel so much better on it. Results are everything, and people are getting amazing results from the raw food diet.

9- Many people who go on a raw-food diet do so because they have health issues in the first place. And the reason they stay on it is because eating this way tremendously helps them.

10 - Fruits and vegetables are the most beautiful foods, and also the most delicious foods to eat. If you didn't have salt and spices, you'd realize very quickly how bland cooked foods really are (ever tried to eat plain pasta or rice?).

Although there are different variations of the raw diet, the idea is basically to eat mostly fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Although some raw-food authors seem to promote a different idea of the raw food diet, which is to just “avoid cooking” and instead dehydrate, chop and mix and find other ways to prepare food - the raw-food diet as most people understand it is a diet based on fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Some schools of thoughts will encourage the consumption of raw animal products, such as raw fish, raw meat, etc., but even then, it only represents a small percentage of the diet. This is not something that I personally recommend. I recommend a diet of basically fruits and vegetables (also including nuts and seeds).

The benefits that come from eating this way do not necessarily come just from the fact that cooked food is avoided, but more from the fact that many different foods are avoided, which raw-foodists believe to be harmful. Those foods include:

- Dairy products, bread, grains and most cooked starch, refined sugar and anything refined.

The key with the raw-food diet is to eat enough to get enough calories. If a person gets enough calories from raw fruits and vegetables, they are also simultaneously getting enough nutrients (even way more than what is recommended, in most cases). The only nutrient that is missing is vitamin B12 - but in ideal circumstances it would be manufactured by the body from the bacteria in the intestines. Since there is a bit of controversy around that, I still recommend a vitamin B12 supplement.

Although the calcium generally falls short of the RDAs, it is generally accepted by vegetarian doctors that we don't need all the calcium that is being recommended to us in the form of dairy products. The important thing is to be able to assimilate the calcium that we eat.

Comments & Questions From the Readers (That's You!)

FOOD COMBINING ISSUES

“First of all - I want to meet you. I think you're a babe and am so appreciative of all the insight and information. I'm an actor on CSI and have been moving towards the raw diet slowly over the past year. Regarding raw food combinations, I have experienced some hard core indigestion since I switched to my 80% raw diet. There are occasions when I have consumed a 100% raw diet and end up having some of the worst heart burn and digestion problems that I had ever experienced. Prior to moving towards a healthier diet, this never happened. Any info on correct food combinations would be appreciated. And when do we get to meet?”

ANSWER: Thank you for writing. First of all, I must say that you've given me very little information to begin with, so my answer will be very generic. Most people who move to a raw diet initially experience some digestive issues as their body is clearing up the old stuff or crap that built up inside of them. This generally lasts a week or two, sometimes 3-4. If it goes on for much longer, there might be something else going on.

But in addition to that, most people also eat the raw diet without paying attention to food combining and make a lot of other mistakes that make things worse. If you want to read my previous articles on food combining, please use the link to back issues of the Newsletter on my website for that.

Here are some tips I can give you for now:

1- Generally, it's better to eat only fruit during the day, and vegetables in the evening. Fats, such as avocados or nuts, combine well with vegetables, but not with fruits.

2- Bananas should not be combined with acid fruits such as pineapple or oranges.

3- Acid fruits such as oranges should not be consumed in excess.

4- Remember to KISS - Keep It Sweet and Simple.

If you haven't read my book “The Raw Secrets” - I highly recommend that you do. It will answer most of your question on the raw-food diet. (http://www.therawsecrets.com).

As for meeting me, we'll be organizing plenty of events in 2006 - stay tuned!

HONEY AND MOLASSES

What are your thoughts on honey and blackstrap molasses?

ANSWER: About honey, many people believe that honey has certain healing qualities. Personally, I find it too concentrated. I believe that honey is a perfect food for bees, but not for humans. It's a concentrated sweet and it's acidic - so two qualities that certainly won't help your dental health. I find honey so sweet now that I don't even know what I could eat it with. With fruit? I don't think so. Maybe if there was nothing else available, I would consider eating honey. But at this point, I prefer to get the natural sugar from fruit instead.

About blackstrap molasses, it's true that it's very rich in minerals. But you've got to understand where these minerals come from. They result from the residues of lime and what's left of sugar cane after it's been boiled for many hours at a very high temperature. Molasses is a by-product of the sugar industry. They used to throw it away but now it's being sold as a health food.

FEEDING CATS AND DOGS?

“Do you have a dog or cat? If you do, I'm curious about what you feed them.”

ANSWER: I do not have a pet (I travel too much for that at this point). However, I love animals and when I'll have a dog I'll feed it raw foods. However, dogs and cats have different needs than humans. They do not thrive well eating just fruits and vegetables. They need much more fat than us, and cannot handle carbohydrates very well. They also require certain nutrients found in meat (especially cats).

There's a book on the subject that you can read. It's called “Raw Dog Food” - I got it on Amazon.com. There are also several websites on the BARF diet for cats and dogs (BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food). Just do a Google search for “Barf Diet” and you'll find tons of information. Here's the website from the instigator of this method: http://www.drianbillinghurst.com

THE FIVE TIBETAN RITES

“Hi Frederic, Thanks again, many times, for your e-zine. Love it. Speaking of exercise, are you still doing the Tibetan 5-Rites? Might be nice if you wrote a follow-up sometime... I've had trouble keeping it a regular thing (in addition to running, yoga, & calisthenics).

A quick question: The first "R-" (spinning). Do you spin 21 times, and call that good? Or 6-7 times x 21 reps?”

ANSWER: The 5 Tibetan rites are a good routine that I recommend to everybody. My own practice of it is not always regular. I often do them every morning for several weeks in a row, but I like for a change to do other types of yoga routines. For the first rite, you actually just spin 21 times. You really get benefits from doing the 5 Tibetans 21 days in a row.

RESENTING PROMOTION?

“I feel as if your e-zine has become just another selling mechanism. You mention you are not like other websites that SELL supplements, etc but your e-zine has less and less information to share and more selling of packets to download or ways to entice people to buy your information.” Maria,

ANSWER:

Dear Maria,

I'm sorry that you think that my e-zine contains less information. I do not know how this is possible, since I've been putting more work into it than ever. Over the past 2 years, I went from a once a month e-zine, to twice a month, and now once a week. Each two weeks, I take time to respond to comments and questions from the readers. I read every single comment that my readers send.

Almost all of the articles that I publish are articles that I write myself, on topics that I know will interest my readers. I always try to find new information that isn't generally available. I do not know anybody else in the raw movement that has an e-zine as complete as mine.

The only reason my articles are shorter than before is because that's what I find my readers like best, as they are busy people who don't have hours to spend reading their e-mails everyday.

Also, I happen to create valuable information products, books, and programs that I market and sell. This is my work. No one is forcing anybody to buy anything, and if you do and you are not satisfied, I always offer a guarantee.

I believe that human interactions should be done on a fair level. With my e-zine, if I was just sending you advertisements for products, it wouldn't be fair at all. On the other hand, if I was just sending you free information without letting you know about the other products that I make available, it also wouldn't be fair to me or to my readers.

TOOTHSOAP WORKS

“I received my order for the toothsoap this past Friday. I do apologize for not e-mailing sooner. I love the toothsoap. My teeth are whiter than ever. Thanks again for all your help. Give my best to Frederic. Thanks to him, I'm living my best life and I could not be happier. Love to you all.” Gavin.
