Dear readers,

I've been having a blast writing my blog. What is a blog (short for weblog)? Simply a journal that is frequently updated with original, often personal content.

So my blog, called “Peaches & a Guitar”, started almost two weeks ago and has already received a fair amount of traffic.

It's enabled me to be more spontaneous and write about different topics I would not find space for in the Pure Health & Nutrition e-zine.

The topics can be all of interest to you, and I try to bring you good resources even sharing with you some of my experiences or successes.

SHOULD WE UNDEREAT?

What do you think of “undereating”?

Dr. Gabriel Cousens writes, “The most important single rule in nutrition is undereat!" He continues “This rule takes precedence over all other dietary advice… In experiments with animals, the undereaters 'in general, were more youthful, vigorous, and energetic, when compared to normals, and showed minimal to no chronic degenerative diseases.'

ANSWER:

First of all, let's define OVER-eating. I think pretty much agrees that overeating is eating beyond one's needs. So using the same definition, UNDER-eating just means eating below one's needs.

Is that good? How could eating less food than what the body needs be healthy?

In fact, it is not.

What these authors mean when they talk about “undereating” as being a healthy practice, they simply refer to eating less concentrated and refined food. It doesn't mean eating less fruits and vegetables or restricting oneself on the quantity of fruits and vegetables eaten.

Most of the experiments that concluded that undereating increases lifespan were done on laboratory animals. The wrong conclusion of these studies is that eating less of EVERYTHING is somehow good for health.

If you're a lab mouse and you're being fed the kind of diet that lab mice get, then you're probably going to live longer on half of the stuff!

If you're a human on a standard American diet then you're also probably going to live a lot longer if you just cut the quantities of food in half.

However, if most of what you eat is fruits and vegetables, then you'll need to eat MORE. Why? Because fruits and vegetables are not very concentrated in calories, but they are concentrated in nutrients. So to get enough energy you eat more food, but at the same time get more nutrients.

This concept is called “nutrient density.” It just means that it's healthier to eat foods that give you more nutrients per calorie “dollar.” So 1000 calories of fruits and vegetables are going to give you a lot more nutrients than 1000 calories of bread and meat.

With whole fruits and vegetables, it would be very hard to overeat, since those foods are nutrient-dense. However, it's quite common to UNDEREAT and thus be hungry all the time, lose too much weight, and so on. This kind of under-eating is certainly not a good thing.

But a standard diet is so toxic and concentrated that just by reducing the amount of food you eat you are certain to improve your health.

GOING ON A SHORT FAST

“I have recently become interested in partaking in a fast. I have read you article about your 23-day experience and find that simply amazing. However I do not intend to attempt such a great feat right away, although I do wish to accomplish a small 3-5 day fast. I was hoping you could provide me with the necessary information to complete this goal as safely as possible. Thank you for your time and consideration.”

ANSWER
:

As mentioned in my books, it is not safe to fast more than 3-5 days on your own. Do not attempt such a fast on your own, even if your initial experiment seems positive or easy.

A short fast can be safely undergone on your own but if you have any health condition you should consult a qualified health professional before attempting it.

It is important to know that the “real” fast doesn't really start until day 3, or even day 5-6. What does that mean? During the first days of the fast, your body lives on its immediate reserves: the glycogen stored in the muscle, the food still in the digestive tract, etc. Then it slowly goes into the fat-burning metabolism where it starts to burn its fat reserves as fuel.

However, it is still beneficial to fast only a few days, just to give the digestive system a break and allow for some detoxification to occur.

Ideally, you want to rest as much as possible. Plan to spend all day in bed. If you fast a few days but work all the time because “you have so much energy” - the benefits of this fast are very limited. Better to fast 3 days in bed than 10 days while working.

You also want to drink enough water so you go to the bathroom 6-8 times in 24 hours.

Also be aware that during a fast, even a short one, you can get dizzy quickly when standing up and can pass out and hurt yourself. So it is imperative that you move slowly when getting up.

If someone around you is not supportive of you fasting, it would be a bad idea to attempt a fast.

COMPARING OURSELVES TO OTHERS

"Frederic - I'm always amazed how you are able to cut through all the nonsense especially when you are talking about comparing oneself to others - it's really all so true (talking about your 6/14 comments). You really have such a way of putting life into the proper perspectives.

This comes into play especially when I'm always so amazed when I look at the poor choices most of my friends make when it comes to eating and how they seemingly survive (I use that term loosely) on a daily basis.

It occurs to me that the constant complaints I continually hear from most of them are the results of those poor choices, which as you say will probably be manifested later on in poor health. It all is seemingly so simple and so elementary if one would only take the time to look at what they are doing nutrition wise - it could be one step toward better health.

ANSWER:

First of all, there is a new supplement or vitamin or superfood coming out on the market every day. At least a few times a week, I get asked what I think of this or that supplement.

So what do I think of this supplement?

Let me put this as graciously as I possibly can: “NOT a whole heck of a lot!”

I believe that good nutrition comes from eating whole fruits and vegetables in sufficient quantities to nourish our bodies, and avoiding harmful substances that compromise health and nutrition. Start with that.

Once you've got that under balance, and this usually takes a few year, then maybe we can talk about the latest supplement, and you'll see that most of them are complete scams.

If I had to believe what all of those websites say on supplements and superfood, I'd be buying every single one of them. Yet I've never taken a supplement that has given me the same results as just eating properly. NEVER!

I do not have time to review every single product that comes on the market for the simple and good reason that I don't believe in them in the first place!

So what do I think of mangosteen juice? Not much! And what about this Ambrostose stuff? It certainly didn't impress me at all.

I do not sell supplements and I'll tell you what: I could make a lot of money doing it. But I would feel too bad about selling things that I don't believe in at all.

What I'm selling you is information that frees you, so you're able to think on your own and not buy the latest health-food craze.

I want you to get to a point where you feel so balanced with your diet and the results you get that each time someone comes up to you and tells you about the latest supplement, your first reaction is: “Why in the world would I want to spend money on this kind of garbage!?”

Enough said.
