"Warning! Not all diets are the same!"

My most useful resource is my book “The Raw Secrets: The Raw-Vegan Diet in the Real World”

I wrote that book in 2002 to relate my experience with diet and healthful living habits and the problems I and others have had trying to make them work in the “real world.” I reveal
all the “secrets” I have learned along the way.

Since “The Raw Secrets” has been published, I've received so many testimonials and positive reviews that it's hard to keep track of them!

Here's one that I received recently:

Questions & Comments From the Readers (That’s You!)

FASTING A DOG

“I have a website www.healthyhealing.org that people can actually watch a video where I fasted a dog for 11 days on just water. He was only about 12 pounds when we did the fast. He is alive and well after 4 years. I think it is a good video for people to watch because people can see the effects of fasting and not just here about it. You are welcome to let people know about the site.” Tawana Jurek

ARE RAW RECIPES HEALTHY?

“In your food combining article (last week), you stated that one should not combine avocados with nuts (so as not to combine two types of fatty foods). I'm perplexed by this because one of the most common raw recipes I've seen is a nori roll recipe that includes at least three types of nuts and avocado. Are you saying this should be discarded?

Phillip

ANSWER: Yes, this food combo is an absolute digestive disaster. In my new recipe book "Instant Raw Sensations" I follow the 3 basic food combining rules in almost every recipe.

GOURMET FOOD BOMBARDMENT

“I thoroughly enjoyed this week of simple 'raw' food - that is exactly how I started 11 years ago (Natural Hygiene and Herbert Shelton's & T.C Fry's Volume's.

We did not have all this gourmet food 11 years ago, like they have today. Even Raw Ice-cream and all the junk food arrived in a flash... now we are being bombarded daily with new concoctions!

We are being fooled into it - and dehydrators... were not even thought of then.... so going back to totally simple is the way to go... but how to stay there is total discipline - we have to persevere!” Barbara

COMMENTS: The key: make it fun!

CLEANSE SUCCESS

“Frederic, your “5-day raw cleanse” was wonderful! [2 weeks ago — FP]

In my over 3 years at 80 % raw, I have never been able to forgo eating lots of fats and seeds and nuts. With your help, it wasn't as difficult as I thought, although I had a lot of hunger and craving the first 3 days. It was simple to take care of: I just ate more fruits and
vegetables, and drank more juice!

I feel much better than I have felt in months. I intend to eat this way 90 % of the time. Thanks a lot for your initiative and help with great suggestions!” Arabella

“Thank you for your great articles. “The Raw Secrets” has helped me address some issues I was having and has made my transition much easier. I look forward to reading your updated version! Keep up the great work!

Regards,

Valerie

This Week’s Featured Article:

Can We Compare Ourselves With Others?

By Frederic Patenaude
Adapted from an article by Albert Mosséri

--

Has the thought ever crossed your mind: “How come some people eat all sorts of crap and still manage to stay healthy, apparently, and live long lives?”

Maybe you wondered, “Why shouldn’t I do the same?” and, “Perhaps the secret to a better health is all about ‘moderation,’ as they say.”

Everyone has a friend or a relative who, in spite of eating meat, drinking alcohol, and often smoking, is cheerful, appears to be doing well, and is even apparently healthier and more energetic than some vegan or raw-foodists! We also all have a relative who died at a very respectable age (90 or older) without placing much thought into his or her eating habits.

So the question then arises: is it actually worth it to make efforts and eat well, be different from everybody else, face the challenges accompanied with it, if in the end we’re not going to live any longer than our neighbors who drink alcohol and party all night?

I received a letter the other day that asks the same question — one that has been asked many times by almost every natural health seeker.

“I am married to a man who is lean, healthy, muscular, very moderate and he eats meat, flour, sugar... anything he wants in moderation and drinks beer too. His grandmother lived to 92. His father and mother both are in their 80's and doing very well. My parents are robust and healthy... they are in their 70's. Everyone around me is doing pretty well, some people get sick... but we all have to die. I'm so confused... Is raw really what I'm supposed to be striving for? Do most or all raw-foodists experience excellent health and never get sick? Do they live LONG lives?”

My correspondent condensed in a few sentences the fears and questions that many of us have. So in this article, I would like to clarify some points made and demystify others.

“I KNOW SOMEONE WHO EATS ANYTHING HE WANTS AND IS REALLY HEALTHY”

Ok, when we all look around, what do we see? We see people who eat anything they want, and yet, somehow get things done, have a career, have fun, and are not going through the same diet struggles you are.

You have been attracted to the ideal of a natural diet perhaps because of some health problems, or perhaps because you only wish to live a better life. Your friends would rather die of some horrible disease rather than changing their eating habits.

The question is, do you actually want to follow them? Do you really want to go back to eating anything and when you get sick, not know why? And do you really think that all of your friends who indulge more than you do are in fact healthy?

Being fit and able to function in the world does not equal with health. How many people do we hear about who “were perfectly healthy until they died of a heart attack”? The truth is, they were never healthy in the first place. They just appeared to be healthy, but on the inside, things were not functioning as well as they thought.

“MOST RAW-FOODISTS EXPERIENCE EXCELLENT HEALTH AND NEVER GET SICK.”

Many people have been fooled by the idea of “paradise health.” They read somewhere that the raw-food diet was going to make them live to be 120. Then they hear about some raw-foodist dying and another getting sick, and they get all confused. “I thought raw-foodists never get sick!” they moan.

In order to experience “paradise health,” you would need the right constitution to start with. It would probably take generations of healthful living. But who is attracted to natural hygiene and the raw diet, generally? Those who experience health problems to begin with. Do these people get better? Yes. Will they ever experience “paradise health”? Probably not.

Let’s not fool ourselves. If someone is doing their best to be healthy and gets sick, it doesn’t mean that what they’re doing is entirely wrong. They are doing their best, but often this is not enough to guarantee “perfect health.” Others factors come into play: genetics, environment, past illness history, stress, emotions, etc. Diet isn’t the only factor.

It is one common mistake to attribute every health problem to diet alone.

“MY FRIENDS ARE IN GOOD HEALTH.”

We look around us, and we see people who eat anything they want and appear to be making it through the day nonetheless. We could think, “They are in good health.” Would we be right?

Personally, I do not know anybody past the age of 50, except my natural hygienist/raw-food/vegetarian friends, who doesn’t take some type of drug or medicine. If you are over the age of 60 and don’t take any drug or medicine, you are a rare pearl!

Everybody is sick. If you’ve been around people long enough, you’ll know it. You’ll heard about their little complaints and their various health problems. The older they get, the longer the list is.

The standard American diet catches up with everybody, including centenarians. In the raw-foods, natural hygiene circle, it is quite rare that someone uses medicines. Many are past the age of 70 and still in great health!

My mentor, Albert Mosseri, wrote:

“Beware: people are all chronically sick, even if they show a cheerful disposition. They don’t talk about their daily misery and pains. They neither listen to them nor ignore them. Fatigue is fought with coffee, insomnia with sleeping pills, constipation with laxatives, pessimism with wine, depression with drugs and headaches with aspirin. We think that they are doing well just by looking at them, but it’s not true.

And those who suffer from nothing, for how long is their strong and resistant organism going to hold up? How long is it going to take before the integrity of the organs, inherited from sturdy parents, is altered by the abuse of food? It’s only a question of time. The fortunate people who have strong genetics will take more time to damage and degrade their bodies than those who have inherited a fragile constitution”

Comparing Ourselves With Others is Pointless

Do you get the point? We cannot say “that person is really healthy therefore if I do like them I’d be healthy too.” There is much more involved than just diet and nutrition.

We all inherited a different constitution. I know, for example, that I couldn’t be an athlete. That’s not the gift I was born with in this world. In spite of my best efforts to eat healthy, there well always be plenty of people around me who can eat crap and out perform me without even trying.

But, everybody has something to gain from healthful living. That will not mean we will not all reach the same level of health, but it’s worth the try, because, what’s the other alternative? If you’re reading this e-zine, you know what it is, and you know also you don’t want to take that road again...

Let’s Compare Ourselves With Ourselves

If we cannot compare ourselves to our friends or even our relatives, we can compare ourselves to ourselves. Let’s check out how we do from a period of time to another, looking the important factors that may have influenced our health.

What are some of these changes? Eating different foods, being in a relationship or being lonely, drinking alcohol or not drinking, staying up late or getting enough rest, exercising or being sedentary, getting enough sunshine or not, etc. All these factors influence health.

We can compare ourselves with ourselves and come to the right conclusions. Comparing ourselves to others will always lead to the wrong conclusions.

Health is a rich subject. Understanding it is a deep process, beyond the scope of casual comparisons.
