Every so often, people ask me the dreaded question “so… what do you do?”
I hate that question not because I’m ashamed of what I do, but mostly because people don’t really *get* what I do even when I explain it to them.
Sometimes I’m tempted to answer like Tim Ferriss, best-selling author of the 4-Hour Workweek, and say “I’m a Drug Dealer.”
The reason why people have such a hard time understanding what I do is that they’ve been brainwashed from birth to think “inside the box” in terms of:
And all of the other standard procedures of the modern employment world.
So when they ask me what I do and I answer:
“I have an online business”
I might as well have spoken Chinese to them.
They’ll usually ask… “So what kind of website? What do you sell”?
Maybe they think I have the “wrong” kind of websites (you know the ones I’m talking about…), so I say the truth and answer:
“Actually, I sell write and sell my own books and courses. My topic is health. I teach people how they can eat better and improve their health with raw foods.”
I purposely avoid the term “ebook” and “information product” because that’s usually something that gets me a blank look.
But even when I explain that I sell my own “books” and “courses”… people have this look of disbelief and say something like:
“Really… and it’s working for you (meaning “you’re not one of those starved writers, right?)? You just sell books?”
That’s the point where I really want to explode and say:
“Dude, I sell information! Information is everything! I sell information in different forms… CDs, books, ebooks, online courses, newsletters… My products sell 24 hours a day, the selling process is completely automated. I don’t ship anything myself. I don’t even go to the post office.”
Well, most people don’t *get* it.
When I say the word “information” I might as well say the word “scthlatgia” or another random combination of letters… They just say “uh uh” and look dumb and pretend they understand but in fact they have NO idea what I’m talking about.
So what I decided I’m going to do to solve this nagging problem of explaining people what I do for a living is create a DVD entitled “How I Make a Living in My Pajamas”. The DVD cover will feature a picture of me in my pajamas.
And the content will clearly explain the magic of having an online business.
How you can, yes, work in your pajamas if you want.
How you can sell a bunch of products on your website without ever going to the post office and shipping anything yourself.
How you can carry your entire business inside of your laptop computer, travel the world or live anywhere you want, and make sales automatically.
I want to do this because I really LOVE this business and I want others to realize that there’s more to life than the 9 to 5.
