Do You Have to Be a Good Writer?

Filed under Do What You Love Tips by Frederic Patenaude

Making a *great* living doing what you love — having that sense of fulfillment that you’re doing what you were meant to do, and being paid what you deserve — requires certain skills.

One of them is writing.

So a few people have asked me, “do I have to be a good writer to start an online business with something that I love?”

My answer is yes, but it depends what we mean by “good” writer.

Generally, when we think of a “good” writer, we imagine a well-read person, with a polished journalistic style, writing with a lot of wit and pulling out great research to come up with award-winning books and articles.

Do you have to be that “good” to succeed?

Certainly not.

But you have to touch, move, inspire and even *shake up* people with your words. You have to learn to find your own voice, and share it with the world.

I don’t think of myself as a “good” writer, but I have a passion for writing and sharing, and connecting with people with my words in a meaningful way.

If you read my articles, you can probably tell at times that English is not my first language. And often there are a lot of grammatical mistakes the e-mails that I send out.

But I don’t let that stop me.

A few years ago, I was working with a book editor. This guy, who worked for a newspaper, used to spend hours and hours writing me long e-mails to criticize my style. He was appalled that the first edition of my book “The Raw Secrets” had “so many” mistakes in it, and was written in “crappy English”, even though a few proof-readers had gone through it.

At some point, I didn’t want that kind of negativity in my life anymore, so I stopped working with him. And this editor in question had written two books of his own, which he had really polished and worked hundreds of hours to research and create.

And you know what? These books were just accumulating dust in his basement. When he would get orders from Amazon or other companies, he didn’t even bother sending them out in a timely fashion. Instead, he would spend all his time writing me these long letters to criticize my work.

Some of the most successful people that make a living online doing what they love are not “good” writers, journalistically speaking.

But they are real, and they write in an engaging and personal way. And they don’t let their “bad English” stop them from succeeding.

When you start your own business doing what you love, you’ll have to write. And you’ll have to get good at it.

But “good” doesn’t mean having a polished style with a lot of panache. It means being YOU, and having something meaningful to say, and writing in a way that touches people, and not being afraid of saying what you want.

Did I piss a few people with the e-mails I sent out in the last two days? Sure.

Did I hear about it from those people? You bet.

But let me tell you something: the sales for the course “How to Make a Living in the Natural Health Movement” have been the highest in the past two days.

Why? Because I’m being real. I’m sharing with you what I’m *really* thinking, and I have something to say.

Even if your English is perfect and your writing would impress a Pulitzer prize winner, you won’t succeed unless you can relate to your readers in a meaningful way… in a way that has them come back over and over again for more.

And the way you do this is being yourself. You don’t have to copy someone else’s style, but instead let your own style emerge on its own.

If you’d like to do that, and learn how your words can touch, move and inspire people, and be able to reap all the financial rewards that come from having a successful business living your passion, you first have to define what your passion is.

And that’s what the course “How to Make a Living in the Natural Health Movement” is about.
